De la Wikipedia, enciclopedia liberă

Wikimedia este numele fundaţiei ce a creat Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Nupedia şi Meta-Wikipedia, locul de discuţii referitoare la proiectele de mai sus. Este o organizaţie non-profit, cu sediul în Florida, SUA.

Jimbo Wales, şeful fundaţiei, a anunţat împreună cu Bomis crearea sa pe 20 iunie 2003. Numele său, "Wikimedia" a fost ales de Sheldon Rampton dintr-o listă de mesaje WikiEN-l din martie 2003.
