Das Wappen basiert auf einem Entwurf von H.P. Schall und wurde am 25. April 1974 vom Regierungspräsidenten Düsseldorf genehmigt.
Im Viersener Stadtwappen lebt die Tradition fort: In blauem Schild symbolisieren drei silberne (weiße) Mispelblüten den Zusammenschluss von Dülken mit Boisheim, Süchteln und Viersen zu einer neuen Stadt am 1. Januar 1970.
Die Mispelblüte, auch „geldrische Rose“ genannt, war mindestens seit 1450 Symbol des Viersener Wappenbildes. Sie wies über Jahrzehnte auf die Zugehörigkeit zur Geldener Verwaltungshoheit hin. Die Viersener Stadtfarben sind Blau und Silber (Weiß).[1]
