s and even the banks of the stream are sub-ject to constant shiftings, the land generally encroaching on thechannel, owing to a line of hills which serve to retain the sediment-ary matter brought down by the stream and washed back by the tides. RIVERS OF MANCHURIA. The two chief rivers of Manchuria are the Sungari and theLiao-he. Although these rivers differ in size, they resemble eachother in the disposition of their valleys. Both flow in oppositedirections, and describe semicircles of great regularity, that of theupper Nonni, or main branch of the Sungari, corresponding withthat of the Shara-muren, or upper Liao-he, while the lower Sungarireproduces the bend of the lower Liao-he. Both the Manchus and Chinese regard the Sungari as themain stream of the common basin which it forms with the Ainur.Yet it is inferior to the latter both in volume and length, except insummer, when its discharge is greater, owing to the melting ofthe snows on the White Mountains.
