Descriere
English: Christian Abraham Fleetwood, was Sergeant Major of the U.S. Colored Troops during the American Civil War and Medal of Honor recipient for his actions at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm (September 29–30, 1864). This photograph was part of the material prepared by W.E.B. Du Bois for the Negro Exhibit of the American Section at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 to show the economic and social progress of African Americans since emancipation.
About 25 years after the end of the Civil War, Fleetwood became major of the Washington Cadet Corps (WCC), a black militia established in 1880. The WCC amalgamated with the National Guard of the District of Columbia (DCNG) in 1887, when it formed the 6th battailon and discarded its ancient uniforms and accoutrements. Fleetwood became the 6th Bn's commanding officer but was transferred to the 7th Bn at least in July 1889, where he also took command. Fleetwood retired in 1892. The picture shows Fleetwood as major of the 7th Bn DCNG, as is visible by the front badge of the headgear, a Pattern 1872 forage cap. It shows two crossed rifles (which in 1875 had replaced the traditional hunting horn insignia used by the infantry since 1833) surmounted by the battaillon's number "7". Fleetwood also wears the Pattern 1872 "hussar style" Officers fatigue blouse closed by five metal front buttons, with black edge braid and five black braid loops on the front. On the chest the Butler Medal (left), the Medal of Honor (center) and an unidentified medal (right). Fleetwood's rank is indicated by a pair of Pattern 1872 shoulder straps with golden oak leafs. The sleeve cuffs were ornated with Austrian knots. The M 1872 officers blouse had become obsolete in the Army in 1876 but obviously continued to be worn in the D.C. National Guard. Fleetwood was a former major of the Washington Cadet Corps (WCC). The WCC amalgamated with the DCNG in 1887, where it formed the 6th Bn and discarded its former uniforms and accoutrements. Fleetwood became the 6th Bn's commanding officer but was transferred to the 7th Bn at least since July 1889, when he also took command. Fleetwood retired in 1892.
Dată Exhibited in 1900. Major Fleetwood was commanding officer of the 7th Bn DCNG from about 1889-1892.
