English: A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) is launched from the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70), during a joint Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Navy ballistic missile flight test. Approximately three minutes later, the SM-3 intercepted a unitary (non-separating) ballistic missile threat target, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. Within moments of this launch, the USS Lake Erie also launched a Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) against a hostile air target in order to defend herself. The test was the eighth intercept, in 10 program flight tests. The test was designed to show the capability of the ship and its crew to conduct ballistic missile defense and at the same time defend herself. This test also marks the 27th successful hit-to-kill intercept in tests since 2001.
Deutsch: Eine Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) wird von der USS Lake Erie (CG 70) während eines Tests der Missile Defense Agency und U.S. Navy abgefeuert. Rund drei Minuten später fing die SM-3 eine von der Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii gestartete ballistische Zielrakete ab. Nur Momente nach dem Start der SM-3 startete die Lake Erie außerdem eine SM-2 zur Bekämpfung eines simulierten, feindlichen Luftziels. Der Test war der achte erfolgreich durchgeführte von bisher zehn Teststarts der Lake Erie, außerdem der 27. erfolgreiche Abfangversuch seit 2001.
Auf dem Bild ist eine SM-3 in der Startphase zu sehen, wie sie den Schacht eines Mark-41-Vertical-Launching-Systems verlässt. Zu sehen ist die offene Schachtabdeckung links von der Rakete. Die Feuersäule rechts der Rakete stammt vom Triebwerk, das bei dem Mark 41 bereits im Schacht gezündet wird, so dass die Flammen abgeleitet werden müssen ("hot launch").
