Triple-Bow Siege Crossbow
The successors of Genghis Khan in the 13th century recruited Chinese artillery engineers to adapt the Chinese siege crossbow for Mongol armies. Weapons like this modern replica could shoot large arrows — including incendiary arrows with a burning tip — hundreds of yards. The operator of the weapon would draw all three bows back at the same time by turning the winch, tripling the weapon's discharge force. The siege crossbow was a key to the success of Genghis Khan's grandson Hulagu's capture of Baghdad in 1258.
The Chinese developed handheld crossbows as early as the 4th century BCE. Like the weapons of the Mongols centuries later, these bows were crafted of composite layers of bamboo, animal horn, and sinew, optimizing their firing strength.
The siege crossbow was employed equally by the enemies of the Mongols and may have eventually contributed to the collapse of the great khanates by the 14th century.
