s are five hundred feet high,but look like ant hills from the lofty crater rim. Thecloud effects of Haleakala are the grandest in theworld. From over the ocean come regiments of whitefeathery banks in long lines likes flocks of wild geese.They storm the mountain heights and pour over thecraters rim in huge Niagaras of eider-down. Thenthey fill the great chasm to its rim and boil and seethelike white froth swirling in a mighty caldron. Theyrise, and you find yourself alone on a peak, shut outfrom the world below. You gaze abroad and seenothing above but the blue bleak sky, and below you,in the cloud effects, oceans of white glaciers, snowbanks, icebergs and ice gorges for a hundred miles inevery direction. When the sun rises the clouds shapethemselves into a huge panorama of the Himalayasand Andes, interspersed with minarets of gold, castlesand battlements of white silver, dark ravines ladenwith fallen snow; forests of rose colored pines, andEgyptian pyramids in purple and olive green.
